Introduction to Arduino Workshop

Have you been curious as to what an Arduino is? Or, maybe you got one as a gift for Christmas but don’t really know how to use it to control a motor or LED. Or, even more confusing, how are you supposed to build a robot out of this little board that everyone promised was the key to building your robot army?

Join Morristown Makers on Saturday morning June 15 to learn what an Arduino can do and how you can make it work for you and your projects.

Who is the class for?

This class is for any age maker who is curious about using an Arduino. You don’t need to own an Arduino to attend the class. If you need to control lights, motors, switches or other actuators for your project, then come to this class to see how an Arduino might be the answer to your needs.

We ask that children 13 and younger be accompanied by an adult for this class.

Skills you will learn

This class is targeted at the beginner. You don’t need to have any experience in using the Arduino.

You will learn:

  • The features of an Arduino.
  • How to use one in your projects.
  • How to set up the Arduino development environment.
  • How to light up LEDs in certain patterns and control their brightness.
  • How to control various motors.

This class is intended to be an introduction into the world of hardware control using the Arduino. Where you choose to go from here is up to you. If you have a specific project that you would like to do with the Arduino, bring your ideas to class and let’s talk about what you might need to learn to bring your project ideas to reality.

What to bring

You don’t need to bring anything to the class. However, if you have a laptop computer and want help setting up the Arduino development environment on your machine, feel free to bring that to class.

You do not need to bring an Arduino to class. But, if you have one, we would be glad for you to bring it and make sure you are comfortable using your own board for development.

Honeycomb Shelf Workshop

Here is a fun project that you can replicate with ease and then use to make a variety of configurations to fit your own personal taste.

Come join us and build this fun and adaptable Honeybee shelf!

What You Will Learn

You will learn to create a 6 sided shelf by understanding how to use an array of tools, like a  table saw, miter saw, a router, disc/belt sander, a palm sander, and air nailers.

  • You will learn methods to measure, mark, and cut wood; even at complicated angles.
  • We will demonstrate proper use of a router for creating a rabbet to recess a back, and milling a dado in order to create a shadow box.
  • You will assemble the shelf using glue and pneumatic nails.
  • We will explore a variety of hanging methods together.
  • We will also apply a finish to our project.

Come spend time with others learning and sharing how to use this creative project in a variety of ways.

March: Upcoming Events

March: Upcoming Events

For the month of March we have classes most weeks available for you. Most classes this month will be from 9 to 11 on Saturday mornings.

The public is welcome to stop by any time the shop is open for a class. This is your chance to get introduced to other makers in our community and find out what is going on at Morristown Makers.

March 2: Basic 3D Modeling

Again the 3D modeling class is available. This is for those who would like to get into 3D modeling but need a help getting started. We are using the free online tool called Tinkercad for the class. This tool is simple enough to get a handle on in a 2-hour class, but yet still powerful enough to some amazing modeling.

March 9: Pallet Wood Blanket Ladder

Blanket Ladder Class

Several people enjoyed building the pallet wood blanket ladder in the month of February. Join us on March 9 for a great opportunity to build this decorative piece that you can use to display your quilts and keep them handy for use on those cold nights.

March 12: Open Shop

From 7p to 9p on Tuesday March 12 the shop will be open for you to stop by and join us for a time of building, tinkering and talking. This is an extra open shop time this month. If you don’t have a project to work on, at least stop in and see what we are all about.

March 16: Hexagonal Shelf

Who couldn’t use another shelf in their house? Here’s your chance to build a hexagonal shelf. After this class you will have a shelf you can proudly display even if you don’t have anything special to put on it. Though a nice jar of honey would feel perfectly at home in this beehive-inspired shelf.

This class will be held from 10-12 in the morning.

March 23: Pallet Wood Bunny

Its official..the groundhog did NOT see his shadow. But that isn’t stopping us from “SPRING-ING” into Easter festivities. Join us for a Saturday morning where we will be creating a pallet wood bunny to put on display this Easter! We can’t wait to see your happy faces on Saturday morning.

March 26: Open Shop

Join us on Tuesday the 26th for our monthly Open Shop night from 7 to 9. This is a time where you can bring in your project and work on it while having other makers around to chat with. Maybe you need help figuring out how to do something in your project; bring it in and see if someone in the community can help you get it closer to completion.

Make: Magazine at Jefferson City Public Library

Make: Magazine at Jefferson City Public Library

Jefferson City Public Library has a subscription to Make: magazine.

If you are not familiar with Make: then you certainly will enjoy the flipping through the pages and getting great ideas for your next projects. Most of their articles can be found for free on their website (along with more details in some cases). However, having all the projects in a magazine format that you can scan easily helps you see which ones you might want to investigate further.

Make: certainly focuses more on technology crafts than traditional. But so many of their projects are a marrying of the two types of DIY.

If you don’t have a Jefferson County Public Library System card then you should certainly consider signing up. You are welcome to read their magazines in the library without needing a card. Jefferson County does not (at least the last time I checked) require that you be a Jefferson County resident to get a card. You just have to live reasonably close to one of the 4 libraries in their system.

Open Shop Night: February 26

The space will be open from 7 to 9 PM on Tuesday, February 26. This will be a monthly time that anyone can come to work on, or get help with, a project. You don’t have to be a member to take advantage of this community event.

You can work on a project or show off something you are working on. This is a casual time of getting to know other makers and seeing what’s coming up at Morristown Makers.

We will do this once a month on the 4th Tuesday. There may be other times in the month when we host special events. Keep up to date by checking out our calendar.

Pallet Wood Blanket Ladder Class

Been wanting to get your hands on a fun and simple DIY project? Let us show you how to make a simple farmhouse blanket ladder out of recycled pallet wood! This class is great for beginners who want to learn how to use basic power tools and do simple wood working. Grab a friend and save the date! See you there!

What to Bring

All tools and materials needed for the class will be provided. However, you should plan to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Who Should Attend

Anyone with a desire to make a decorative blanket ladder can attend the class regardless of previous woodworking skill. This is a hands-on, guided activity. Don’t let your experience level keep you away.

Young people ages 13 to 18 are welcome to attend the class as long as a parent is present.

Tinkercad Resources

The Tinkercad classes went very well this weekend. Thank you to everyone who came to the class and asked great questions. The teacher (me) even learned some new tricks.

Lessons

Tinkercad includes lessons inside the website where they walk you through some of the basics. What I showed in class were what Tinkercad calls lessons; however, they also have a projects section. The projects are much more complex, but working through one or two will help you understand more of the proper order of operations that I mentioned in class.

Keyboard Shortcuts

The keyboard shortcuts paper that I handed out in class can be found on the official Tinkercad page about shortcuts. They occasionally update the PDF on that page so that you can find the most up-to-date shortcuts there.

Video Tutorials

There is one set of tutorials that I saw when I was first trying to learn Tinkercad that helped me understand some of the more advanced techniques. Below you will find the first lesson in that 7 video series.

During class we talked about the codeblock editor inside of Tinkercad just a little. This gives you more control on going back and changing your designs without having to deconstruct the item. Below is a video that gives a brief overview of how this works. I included Chuck’s video because he is as YouTuber that I enjoy watching, but it may not be the best video on the subject. So here is a link to a group of videos about the codeblock editor inside of Tinkercad.

Again, thank you to everyone who came to class and made this class a success!

February 9 Meet & Greet Results

We had a good turnout for the second Meet & Greet event at Morristown Makers. Several people stopped by to find out what we are doing at the space. It was exciting to have most everyone stay more than an hour (and some more than 2!).

During the day we worked on a few different projects in between eating popcorn and chatting with visitors. Two people put together a demo piece for the pallet wood blanket ladder class. A couple worked on a rustic barn wood fireplace mantle.

Enjoy a playful timelapse video of the day.

The next events we have scheduled are classes for the next two weekends. On February 15 and 16 there will be a class on basic 3D modeling using Tinkercad. The following weekend (February 22 and 23) we will be teaching how to build a blanket ladder using reclaimed pallet wood.

For both of these classes you only need to attend either the Friday night session or the Saturday morning session. The same thing will be taught on Saturday as was taught the night before. Pick one of the two class sessions and join us for an upcoming class at 50% off for this month.

Please register to reserve your spot in the class.

Second Meet & Greet

Join us Saturday morning February 9 for our second meet and greet event. This is a time to hang out with like-minded creators and share your ideas while being inspired by others.

This gives you a chance to see what Morristown Makers is all about. We also have a coupon for 50% off of a future class that you can pick up on Saturday. Speaking of classes, all our classes in the month of February are 50% off.

Drop In

This is a drop-in type event. No need to stay the entire time. However, you are certainly welcome to do so. Bring a project with you that you want to show off or get some help on. We will have people skilled in woodworking, Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, home decor and 3D printing at the shop that morning.

Details

We will meet at the Morristown Makers shop near Panther Creek Rd. and 11E.

Time is 9a to 1p. If you end up staying the whole time and need something to eat, there will be snacks available. The free popcorn may not fill you up, but you can enjoy the process while trying.
